How this calculator works

Federal tax uses the 2026 ordinary-income brackets and standard deduction for the selected filing status. When other household wages are entered, this calculator assigns this job the incremental federal tax between household tax with and without the job.

Social Security is 6.2% of applicable wages up to the 2026 $184,500 wage base, reduced by prior-year wages entered for this same worker. Medicare is 1.45% plus the incremental 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above the filing-status threshold. Traditional retirement deductions reduce estimated income-tax wages but not FICA wages; entered Section 125 benefits are modeled as reducing both.

Traditional 401(k)/403(b) deductions are capped at the 2026 $24,500 basic elective-deferral limit and at this job's gross pay. Catch-up contributions, employer matches, W-4 withholding mechanics, credits, and plan-specific payroll limits are not modeled.

State and local results apply editable effective rates to adjusted wages. They do not model a specific jurisdiction's brackets, deductions, reciprocity, disability insurance, paid-leave premiums, or unemployment assessments. This tool is for budgeting, not filing or payroll compliance.
